Ко́шки (лат. Felis) — род хищных млекопитающих из семейства кошачьих. В устаревших систематиках к нему причисляли всех представителей малых кошек, однако в современной классификации непосредственно к кошкам относятся лишь некоторые малые виды, обитающие в Евразии и Африке, из которых наиболее известной является произошедшая от лесной кошки домашняя кошка.
К роду кошек относятся:
барханная кошка (Felis margarita)
китайская кошка (Felis bieti)
лесная кошка (Felis silvestris), в том числе домашняя кошка и степная кошка
манул (Felis manul)
камышовый кот (Felis chaus)
черноногая кошка (Felis nigripes)
Первое археологическое свидетельство приручения домашней кошки обнаружено на Кипре и относится к 7500 лет до н. э[2]. В Древнем Египте кошка считалась священным животным, убийство которого каралось смертью. Сегодня кошка является одним из наиболее популярных домашних питомцев.
Само слово кошка означает либо биологический вид вообще, либо самку кошки. Самцов называют котами или также кошками. Котёнок (мн.ч. котя́та) — детёныш кошки.
Существует множество пород кошек, от длинношёрстных (персидская кошка) до лишённых шерсти (сфинксы). Несмотря на то, что кошки были одомашнены достаточно давно, они способны выживать в условиях дикой природы. Кошки обычно охотятся в одиночку, но иногда образуют небольшие колонии. Они достаточно умны, что позволяет некоторым из кошек пользоваться простейшими механизмами (рукоятью двери или клапаном смывного устройства унитаза). Также кошки отличаются хорошим зрением, обонянием и слухом.
